John Mackie

John studied law at the University of Aberdeen and joined PRG as a trainee solicitor in 1985. He remained with the firm as an assistant and then an associate and was appointed as a partner in 1995. Yes, 10 years it took them!

John practises in many areas of the law but has a particular interest in entertainment, media and intellectual property law as well as claims based on contract and professional negligence. He acts for a number of high profile clients involved in the entertainment industry as well as from the worlds of property and commerce. He also maintains a successful private client practice at our office in Erskine.

John deals with clients who need advice on copyrights, trademarks and other intellectual property matters. Having originally trained in litigation he retains an interest in the firm’s court department but has also extended his practice to include commercial, corporate and property transactions.

He has been involved in a number of cases on behalf of musicians involving the recovery of royalties lost in the midst of time arising from the break up and reformation of acts from the 1960s to the present day. Collectively the clients he has advised have accumulated over 50 top ten hits and counting. And John has all the albums!

In June 2015, John was appointed to the staff of the University of Glasgow teaching several subjects as a part time tutor of law in the Department of Professional Legal Practice. He was appointed deputy senior tutor of Commercial Contracts in 2018. John is married with twin daughters. His interests include music and the performing arts. He was a professional musician, playing with a 10-piece soul band for many years. He retired when he finally realised that most stage calls were way after his bedtime!
